Peavey PV215 Dual 15" Pro
I bought these speakers not to long ago but I dont think am using them properly. Should these speakers be used with a crossover or just direct to the amp.
The reason am asking is that when I use the crossover to adjust the sound it does not seem to work properly.
For example I have to set the frequency at exactly 250 in order to get any sound out of both speakers. If i move the frequency up or down it will shut down one of the speakers.
I would like to get more of a mid sound but I can not.
This is my crossover:http://www.usspeaker.com/bbe%20max-x3-1.htm

Hi mate
Your speakers are designed to operate as a full range system. They already have a built in crossover and should be connected directly to your amp.
You will only require the electronic crossover if you , for example add a pair of base bins. you would then use the crossover to provide separate signals to two power amps 1 to drive your PV speakers and one to drive your base bins.
The crossover takes the stereo signal and splits the signal into low,mid and high frequencys if you look on the back panel you should find separate outputs for high and low frequency outputs (on each channel) but only a single input (on each channel) each of the outputs would then be connected to a sepatate amplifier input (up to four amplifier channels are required) and then on to the speakers. this way the crossover ensures that the bass sound goes to the bass speakers and mid/high frequency sounds go to the mid drivers and horns.
Hope this helps

I have the bass bins 18's and I have two amps. I guess I will only use the crossover for the subs and connect the peaveys direct

Sorry if i was teaching you to suck egg's.
You can use the crossover to split the signal at 150ish Hz but your PV units will not get any signal input below 150Hz.
If you use your crossover to drive the amp connected to the 18's try setting the crossover frequency at arround 150Hz this will enhance the lower bass notes nicely. the PV speakers should go down to 80Hz reasonably well so you will have a nice overlap.
Have fun

No
what I mean is that the PV's will work on their own down to about 80Hz before their output naturaly falls off. You don't need to connect them to the crossover.
If you use your bass units through the crossover set at 150Hz it avoids sending signals above 150Hz to the bass bins (18 inch bass bins dont realy work well above 150Hz, they are not designed to).
The whole point of the bass bins is to re-inforce the very low frequency bass that your PV's are already producing. The PV's already have quite large 15 speakers in them and these are capable of producing most of the bass output.
Hope this makes sense.

i had a peevey set up years ago, bought second hand from a band that had split up, great deal and a great sound, only problem was the bloody weight of the stuff, lol. the crossover was plugged into the back of the peevey amp and once you switched on you got a sweet sound out of the gear, in fact i think i still have the crossover lying around somewhere, so if you need one and it's compatible you can have it. hope you get yours sorted soon.

I run the same speakers & they will pound just fine on their own. Just run them straight up off the amp the way they were designed, and let them do their thing.

I ran the peaveys direct and they sound good but how do I get signal to my subs since am bypassing my crossover?
I found that in the back of my mixer I have one output for sub and it has some kind of a crossover.... can I just use this output?
If so is there a splitter to where I can run both subs?

ola,
I was reading the manual on the mixer and it sounds like they only recommend one sub to be connected to the mixer. Is this correct?

Looks like your mixer has a built in crossover on the sub output, don't know if you want to use that or the crossover in your rack.
You might experiment and see which gives you a better sound.
You should take the main out from your mixer to amp1, from amp1 to your PV215's.
and
Go from the sub out on your mixer to amp2, from amp2 to your bass bins. You can user the internal crossover on the mixer to adjust the frequency.
OR
Go from one of your zoned outputs to your external crossover, from the crossover to amp2, from amp2 to your bass bins.
I think this is what I would try.

Do I need to purchase some kind of "Y" cable? Is this recommended?

SORRY, I edited while you were replying. I hadn't looked at the specs for you mixer before I replied before.
I would use the BBE instead of the crossover built into your mixer.

do you think you could post a pic of the cable that i would need to do this i
i dont want to purchase the wrong cable

I think your mixer uses RCA on the zoned outputs. You will have an unbalanced signal from the RCA connections, so you will need something to adapt from RCA to a phone plug or you can go RCA to XLR. You can find each of these types of cables at this site...

This sounds like to many adapters...............will it affect the quality of sound?
Posted Sat 28 Feb 09 @ 7:39 am
If you are using the sub output of your mixer. All you have to do is send that signal to an amp that is powering your subs. the signal is line level....so connecting 2 subs will not be a problem. You do not have to use a crossover if you are using the sub output of your mixer.
If it does not sound right coming out of your sub output of the mixer. Then run a signal to your crossover and send the low signal to the amp powering the subs. Go which ever way sounds best.

Hi mate
Can you let us know what power amps you are using.
most amps have link connectors for the inputs to allow you to daisychain more than one amp together. If you can, stick with XLR connections as much as possible. they will give the best signal quality.
If your amps have link sockets on the back feed the stereo signal from your mixer to the amp driving the main PVs then link from this amp through the crossover and into the amp driving your bass bins.
Hope that helps

QSC RMX 1450 for my tops Peavey 215s
Crown XLS 802D for my subs (Harbinger)
Went to my local store and the gentleman explained to me that my 802 did not have a function where you could connect on one channel and click a switch and activate the other channel....bummer
so he sold me a Y that will come out of my mixer and then in to my amp....so am going to try it tomorrow

Hi Mate
The Y cable will work ok but you have a good crossover so my suggestion is to use the BBE. Its a little more complicated but the QSC amp has the connectors to do whats required and you will have far more control over the subs.
You will need: 2 x 1/4" jack cables (From your mixer to the QSC Jack inputs)
2 X XLR Male to Male cables (From the XLR Female sockets on the QSC to the XLR Female inputs on the BBE)
2 X XLR Female to Male cables (From the Bass outputs on the BBE to the inputs on the Crown)
You might get some funny looks when you ask for the Male to Male XLR cables but it will work.
All the best
