Topic: Upgrading from 4.3 to 5.2 on Windows XP Pro Lap Top - Advice, Comments....

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Let me start by saying I have been using 4.3 for years, and it has been rock solid. Never so much as a hiccup...

I have been playing around with 5.2 and I have been thinking about upgrading from 4.3.

I only mix music, no videos. My DJ laptop has never been online, its completely tweaked for audio only. Its a two year old Dell that works flawless.

What are the benefits of upgrading? What are the downsides?

Are there any sound quality advantages of 5.2 over 4.3?

Will my database, cue points and BPM remain intact? Did they get rid of the one touch automix feature in 5.2?

Can I run both programs on the same laptop? What is the best way to back up my files? Database?

Any and all advice is appreciated. I do not want to harm my current VDJ with the upgrade?

Thanks for your time and advice.

I have been using 5.2 almost since it was released. It has not crashed once. I kept 4.3 in my backup laptop and when I use it, I miss some of the new functions. ( In autoplay the incoming song is displayed in the bottom of the one being play., The sound is better, less "metallic"., etc)

My database for what I use(bpm, genre, comments, cues), did not suffer, I use a external hardisc and the database resides there, so I play the same music in the two diferent system versions without any problems, (but I am cleaning my database constantly...)

I conect my laptop everyday to internet (Mcafe) and I have had zero problems with that
.
I don't think you can run the two versions at the same time because 5.2 is an upgrade, but I am not sure.

More than backing up only the database, I backup all my music with the database included.

I hope it helps.

Well for one thing Chris, the longer you wait, the more you fall behind in terms of getting used to new functionality. There may come a time when for example a version 6 has a feature you really want, and then your learning curve is that much steeper if you are coming from 4x.

Yes Chris.

You can have both on the same machine and have both work flawless. I would say to ADD 5.2 instead of upgrade. That way you can keep your current version and work with the newest version and see which one you like better.

I would advise that you set a system restore point BEFORE you download the newest version.

If i'm not mistaken, you can copy the database into the new version. Yup...you can. I did it.

I have both 3.4 and 5.2 on the same machine. If you need help, please ask.

How do you make a backup file of the database?
where is it located?

i currently use v3.4 with my hercules dj MK2 console and i just ordered a Hercules rmx dj console i realized that u have to now upgrade to v5 to use that console and i can't affort to lose any of my cue points or bpm settings..what is the procedure to make a backup file and edit it.

confused???

if you upgrade to v5 you should not loose your old data just install VJD on the version you got

You can always backup your database and any plugins you have installed first by simply making a copy of the following folder: My Documents\VirtualDJ

IMPORTANT: You should backup your database and music collection on a regular basis.

ok guys I have been using version 3.X for a few years now and I bought an RMX last week and went up to version 5.2. Ok, I like some of the features, but I miss a whole lot!!! I don't have the ability to play samples, I don't see where I can configure anything to MY specifications, and of course the loop config.( I did the posts on loading the Steel skin and assigining it). However, I have gigs coming up and I need to have my samples going and need to change settings. Am I missing something? Do I need to go to the Pro version before I can do this? did I make a mistake and have to go back to the MK2????

Let me know your thoughts!

You need to purchase the Pro version for access to those items.

Wow I thought they would have ported that over from version 3.x, but if I have to go Pro for those features, then so be it! At that point, I will be able to play one shot samples, looped samples in sync and what other specific additions.....if you don't mind me asking. I will lay out the money, just wanted to know what exactly would benefit from it.

I appreciate it, and sorry if this is a repeat post!

Download and run the 5.2.1 trial and you will see. There were great changes from 3.x to 5.x and the FREE limited edition that ships with the Hercules controllers was reduced because of this. Make sure you using your Serial number for the 5.2 LE that you have and get a discount on the upgrade -- http://www.virtualdj.com/buy/ go to the bottom of the page and use that for your upgrade.

Yeah I guess I have to go up to Pro, cause I am not that impressed with the 5.2 Limited Edition version I have now.

Thanks

pro does a lot... more than I ever use... LOL

Cool. To be honest, I thought version 3.4 was it! It had everything I needed! I blew away all my boys with Serato, Denon Cd players, and Pioneer Cd players. So when I got 5.2.1 lloaded (limited edition version) I thought, is this it? I was trying to figure out why would they have a new version that takes away all the features that a previous version had? So if you all are telling me when I go Pro I will get it back then I will purchase pro.

I am not happy about not having a heapdhone selectable switch on the RMX (like on the Mk2) where I could select if I wanted to hear a cue, a mix, etc. i can live with that though. but cue has to be better someway in the Pro version.

Thanks again DJ's,

Big Fish
