Back in 1985.. i bought 2 Technics SLBD straight arm turntables and a Gemini 2 channel mixer. Its wasn't the best but, that's what i used to master my blends. I had to place a quarter as weight on top of the needle so it wont skip. I dj yed a few house parties and it played ok. A few years later... i stepped up to the 1600s then the 1200s.. My music collection at that time was mostly based on freestyle ( Brenda K Starr-Lisa Lisa-TKa-Noel-Judy Torres ) My mother would tell me ever week... how many " more " records are you gonna buy this time. Save your money and stop spending it on nonsense. LOL

i had it lucky cause my dad was a dj so my first set up was 2 first gen tech 1200's and a gemini 19" rack mount mixer surrounded in wood! As you can tell from the pics, my dad was serious about his sound so there was a lot of other equipment that he had that i was 2 young to understand.

My dad was from Trinidad so the first music i was spinnin was calypso and reggae. Then i started paying freestyle and 80's/90's rap, house and pop. When i started getting complements at house parties and school dances (at 12 years old), i discovered promo only and the rest is history!

I built a simple twin-deck console in around '89 out of two '70s record players, using parts from a broken cassette player and TV set to make a functional homemade mixer... first tunes played on it? The Reynolds Girls - I'd Rather Jack, The Mixmaster - Grand Piano, and other such classics... ;-)

Good to see more Trini's here. I also started very young about 12 years doing school parties and basement parties using 1200's. The biggest parties were the all night block parties and Caribbana (about 750,000) people parting on the street!

Back in 93 i found a old rtf-system with build in record-player+tape-deck+equalizer and a old recordplayer from 64(!) made in the german democratic republic with a old mixer from a train station(!!) with a build in mic on a junk-yard. I had a old tape-deck that had a little screw so i could pitch up or down. I repaired everything, which took me quite some time. Later i got the chance to repair a non-working record-player/mixer/tapedeck-unit in a flat design with everything side to side with build in pitch for the record player for the first time for me. I was feeling like a mad scientist at that time cause everything was pretty self-build but working. I was able to sync a lot of sounds and scratch also. Boy, i´ve been so happy with it :D
I always been a fan of the invisible scratch piklz and have´nt been interested in doing partys or anything like that. just my little scratchin` :) Oldschool electro like Bambata, Davy DMC, Grandmaster DXT, Grandmaster Flash, 80´s music like blue monday, pink floyd or madonna and everything else i could get my hands on, children sing-along records and what not.....
well, at least i thought so back than ;)
thats the 64 record player

In 2000 i got my self the numark battle pack (2xtt-1625+mixer) to step my game up. I used everything all together till 2004 when i suddenly discovered AtomixMp3 and my world changed. I even used that all alltogether...wicked :D Thats when i got my DJ-name special K. Because my setup was so...special, just like my music-style and my style of living.
In 2005 i took the traktor-train to go completely digital and i am now using it with a bcd3000 and the tt´s..... well when im not having the chance to get my hands on vdj atleast. Im happy to say that im now trying to save the money it takes to get me back to atomix... or what it has become( in a good meaning)
well, and the first set that i have been spinning would be .... electro, hiphop, breakbeats,Westbam,Oldschool-electro and famous( in 02,never took djing serious til than)) german and us-rap scratched over the beats. Doing so till now :)
yours sincerily,
special K
btw happy holidays to all of you

i started with my mates citronic coffin set (around 1993)
no pitch control, they were dire!
at some point I bought 2x pioneer cdj's and a djm 500....they were the dogs bollocks. then I realised I missed the feel of vinyl so 2x mismatched vestax, 2x numarks and a dodgy 1210 that didnt work right....
now I have turntables coming out my ears.

i started out in 86 with a fisher price plastic brown and yellow record player and a twisted sister and mj thriller records, possible threw some stevie wonder and billy joel in there
the only thing was, i was so young that i thought you scratched by manually moving the tone arm across the record!
needless to say those records dont play too smooth anymore!

I first decided I was interested in DJing just before my 17th birthday in December 1983. I had played around with equipment since about 1976. By that date in '83 I had already been an emancipated minor for over a year and had taken the CHSPE test so I had already graduated high school by 16. I started out working in a teen club called Grand Central Station in Pomona, CA (L.A. County). I was hired as a bouncer because I was always a hard-ass even when I was a kid. Hell I lived in the mean-streets of L.A. As an Arab kid that looks white in an all Black & Hispanic area I had to fight to save my ass nearly everyday until they realized that I just wasn't one to lay down and give up. In these kind of neighborhoods back then white people were considered more privileged even though I was basically homeless it took awhile to break that stigma, over time their perception of me changed and I just became one of them. I was even called an "Oreo", lol.
I became pretty well known in the area and this cool cat named Amos, a hugely muscular African-American took notice of this "crazy-whiteboy" and offered me a place to live and a job as a bouncer in this club so I could "channel my aggressions in a more positive manner". Amos was the club manager and head of security of this wildly popular club. Teens from a hundred miles away would frequent the club in droves. In the early to mid 80's these clubs were rampant and a very popular venue for teens. there was even a news segment on T.V. about the L.A. Teen club experience in '83-'84.
Amos knew I had been living in my car on one of the toughest streets in L.A. County, Holt Blvd. in Pomona so he introduced me to his younger brother Al. Al was one of the DeeJays at the club. He and I ended up sharing an apartment. He had DJ equipment in the pad so I quickly learned the DJ "ropes" from him. He had Technics 1200s and a Numark mixer and all of the latest vinyl. Al was from Baltimore and NYC so he had a very unique style (and accent) and I just soaked up all of the knowledge I could. A few months later I would end up taking over for sick DJs or I would "guest" DJ, and sometimes Al and Amos would just let me take the whole set for the night. Then just as they were offering me a full time position as a resident DJ I had to tell them that I enlisted in the Army.
So by May of 1984 I had become a DJ with according to them "uncanny ability in such a short time". I took those skills with me at 17 years old through basic training and AIT in Ft. Knox, KY. then on to Stuttgart, Germany where during liberty and on some weekends I would guest DJ in clubs over there. that's where I got the "Electro" bug. While I wanted to learn more about their music they wanted me to play American Hip Hop & R&B, so we collaborated and had a great time filling the club with Germans and American soldiers and lots and lots of woman!!! Man I loved those German chicks!!
Fast-forward to 1986 when I finished my 2 years of active duty I came home and got my job back as a bouncer and "guest" DJ until about a month later a residency. While I worked a day job and went to college, got married in '87. I had my own equipment and did lots of mobile stuff too. I worked a variety of clubs as either a resident or a guest DJ at some of the hottest clubs in L.A. and the Inland Empire until about 1997, a year after my divorce from my ex and subsequent marriage to my current wife who pretty much forbade me to DJ in clubs again, lol.
Summary of gear over the years;
As I mentioned I got into DJing back in 1984 when I was 17 years old but had been messing with the equipment as early as 1976. I never thought about being a DJ until 1984 so that's where it began for me as a lifetime love/hobby/2nd career. In the 80's I used vinyl and in 1992 I went to CD using a Denon DN-2000F in a club that I worked at. I had convinced the owner to buy one for me to use in addition to my Technics SL-1200s I had been using for 8 years along with my Numark DM1000A mixer. Later in the 90's (before getting out all together) I acquired more Numark and Gemini gear.
Now it's all digital. Pioneer is my gear of choice these days, though I do have multiple kits of other brands. You can read about my current gear on my profile/home page here on VDJ Forums.
My focus now is to help aspiring DJs and DJettes whether they are just kids or old like me who want to learn. Mobile is my gig of choice now.
