PLAYING PREFERENCE

Sun 13 Aug 06 @ 11:50 pm

Although I collect many genre of music, I specialize mainly in Reggae, guess because of my roots... besides the beats really rock. Dancehall music which is a form of Reggae is really where it is at in the island these days. and May differ in sound from the traditional Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer, Gregory Isaacs sort of thing.

Dancehall is a deeper, faster, more gyrating sort of groove. and can be anywhere from 97 BPM to 130 BPM. Many of dancehall songs are played on what we term "RIDDIMS". This is where a several songs are done on the same instrumental or rhythm (RIDDIM). It is pretty simple to mix a couple of these songs quickly drawing great appreciation from the crowd, without missing a beat, especially the songs that are hits. An example is of this is Sean Paul's "Gimme the Light" which is done on the Buzz Riddim, (16 other songs done on this riddim), of course Sean's song was one of the least played here in Jamaica... and became a big hit overseas nearly a year afterwards. Sean Paul's "Burnin" (Steps Riddim) and Sean Paul's "Temperature" (Applause Riddim). Of course me using Sean Paul as an example is just because I guess most persons may know his songs. He is by far not the best. All Jamaicans know that his singing style is borrowed from fellow DJ Super Cat. We have other artistes such as Beenie Man, Bounty Killa, Vybz Kartel, Wayne Marshall, Busy Signal, Aidonia,Voicemail and a host of others.

Soca, Hardcore HipHop/R & B, Souls is also high specialized music locally and remixes of these songs done on our RIDDIMS draws great ovations.

Soon I will post a list of the songs.. that I am pretty sure that most persons may never have heard of. This is the real Jamaican music.
