Topic: Need Help - Old school vinyl DJ returning to the scene

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I need help deciding what equipment to buy.

I am an old school vinyl DJ returning to the scene and trying to move in to the 21st century. I downloaded VDJ5 demo and have had the itch ever since.

My turntables of choice are the Technics 1210 series, but I am not sure if they will timecode properly with VDJ5.

I have a Sony Vaio SZ series laptop with MS Vista, but it only has a headphones output so I beleive I will need a USB Sound cards in adition to turntables, a mixer, ETC that will all work with VDJ5.

Any input or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hi there, and welcome to the digital scene ;)

Your 1210s will work EXCELLENT with timecode. The better turntables, the better control on the timecode.
Just like real vinyls. And your decks are awesome...

What you need:

- The software (pro licence)
- Timecode vinyls
- a soundcard that runs on asio drivers, and has at least two line ins and two line outs (IN STEREO)

Or get a package that includes all of above, branded as Numark Virtual Vinyl
(same software as VDJ)

Hope that helps ;)

Software and TC Vinyls being ordered this week.

As for the sound card, any recommended make and models?

The mixer, are there any specifics I need to know, stadard DJ Mixer vs. USB DJ Mixers

Also, do I ne any other hardware to timecode the vinyls

My understanding is that my TBs will hook to the mixer as normal. The mixer will hook to the sound card and the sound card to the laptob...

Is this correct? Again I am new to this 21st century DJ'ing...

TIA

Well, you could, as said, get the all in one package : Software + Vinyls + great soundcard

That package is named Numark Virtual Vinyl and is easy to get in US.

Its the same software as VirtualDJ. and contains all you need, even cables.

If you want to select soundcard yourself there is a few solutions

Will post in a sec

How to connect timecode setup is fairly easy :

- Put the timecode vinyls on your 1210s
- Connect the RCA cables from your 1210s to your soundcards line ins
- Then connect your soundcard outputs to your external mixer

Connect the software to your PC, and fire up VirtualDJ, and go to timecode settings to set up the signal.

This way you would control VirtualDJ from your turntables just as if you where playing real vinyl.

There are 3 modes in the settings in VDJ:

- Absolute mode : for hard-core vinyl control, where it acts exactly like real vinyls does... with the pro and cons that gives. No software aids.

- Smart mode : this will allow the software to aid your vinyl control (anti-skip, etc), plus have all software features work, such as loop, sync, cues and more

- Relative mode : A bit of both, form the two above modes.

Made for VDJ/Numark:
- Numark Virtual Vinyl box (as build in amp/bypass etC)

Other timecode soundcards :

USB card that work good :
- Maya44 usb

and more

Firewire cards that work good:
- Prosonious Firebox
- Shaffire Le
- Edirol FA-66 , FA-101 and more
- Digidesign Digi 002 Rack
- Ego-Sys QuataFire 610
- Hercules 16/12 FW
- M-Audio FireWire 1814
- Terratec Phase 88 Rack FW
and more

PCI cards that works good :
- Delta 44 & 66, Delta 1010LT & 1010
- Soundblater X-FI platinum or elite
- Mayy 44 PCI
- Maya 1010
- Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinium Pro
- Sound Blaster Audigy 4 Pro
- Echo Layla 3G
- Ego-Sys ESP1010
- Ego-Sys WaveTerminal 192M
- Soundblaster E-MU 1820, 1820M
- Marian Marc 4 MIDI
- Terratec Phase 88 Rack
and lots more

PCMCIA cards that works good
- Soundblaster E-MU 1616M
- RME Audio Hammerfall DSP System

Generally speaking, almost any card that has two line ins in STEREO, and two line outs, will work, and if it has ASIO drivers its likely to work awesome (low latency drivers).

Those listed above are PRO cards, so some are damn expensive..
But get a card thats not the most expensive, but not the cheapest eather.

Soundblaster is a good solution on budget.

you need a card with asio and low latency ;)

Easiest way for you living in US would be Numark way though, easy to get at local dj store, guitar center etc:

One package with all you need ...
- Software (pro license of Numark branded version of VirtualDJ)
- Vinyls
- Soundcard
- Cables

Welcome. All the above is excellent information. Another thing to consider is the amount of ram in your laptop. The more the better. You can get by with 512 but I would recommend at least 1 gig. Standard Mixer will work fine as well. You could go for a USB that will allow you to control some of VDJ's functions if you don't want to touch a mouse at all. I just use a standard one and have a touch pad that I mounted on my mixer.

use the mixer's record or studio output and plug that in to the laptops's soundcard (line in or mic), in the recording options select line in.

Numark Virtual Vinyl came with NVV v5rev4...
