Topic: Can't get USB sound card to split sound - still coming out of one

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Hi all, I'm hoping there's just a really obvious thing I'm missing here... but basically, I bought myself a USB sound card so that I can pre-listen with headphones. I'm using the free Virtual DJ Home, but I read that other than the sound not being great (not problem, I want to learn to mix to practice, not play live) it should still be possible. I got one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/PC-Trading%C2%AE-Virtual-Stereo-External/dp/B005NPK5DE/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1424851244&sr=8-3&keywords=sound+card+usb and admittedly, after it was dispatched, I read that it's for windows (I'm on a MacBook OS X version 10.8.5) but an website told me that it would still work - http://www.digitaldjtips.com/2011/02/dj-mac-1-dollar-sound-card/

I plugged the sound card in, it recognised (got a red light) and then I configured the sound according to the virtual dj guide (http://www.virtualdj.com/wiki/Pre-listen%20using%20headphones%20in%20VirtualDJ%20Home%20FREE%20or%20Broadcaster.html) Didn't work - it was coming out of just one - the speakers which were plugged into the usb soundcard. I read somewhere else that I had to change my audio midi setup settings by configuring the speakers to quadraphonic. I managed to do this, but only by aggregating the device to create 4 outputs.

Still not working. Actually, after this last change I made, no sound was coming out.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Let me know if you need any screen shots or further info.

Any help massively appreciated! Cheers

It would help if you could state exactly how your VDJ sound settings are configured (and whether you're using VDJ 7 or 8).

You need to set VDJ to the "speaker + headphones" config, then set the main output (speakers) to use one soundcard, and the headphone output to use the second soundcard.

I followed this page exactly - http://www.virtualdj.com/wiki/Pre-listening%20with%20headphones.html

So input is none
output is Master: first card / head phones second card
Sound card: 2 cards + USB - Built in output and multi output device

I read the below on the notes for the free version (http://www.virtualdj.com/wiki/Pre-listen%20using%20headphones%20in%20VirtualDJ%20Home%20FREE%20or%20Broadcaster.html)

"If you are using a laptop (Or desktop with stereo sound card), you can add a basic stereo USB sound card for the headphone output. Your computer's built-in sound card will be used for the master output and the USB card for your headphones (Plug your headphones into the USB card)"
so it shouldn't be because I'm using the free version?

Which version of VDJ Home are you using - 7 or 8?

I think some of the info you've found is incorrect, because apparently it was not possible to use two separate audio interfaces in VDJ 7 Home - but it is now possible in VDJ 8 Home.

This issue has come up before, and it was pointed out - but obviously it's still not been changed.

Sorry forgot to answer that bit. It's 7. Knew it would be something obvious. Thanks for the help

Can you give it a try with version 8 and see if it works there ? http://www.virtualdj.com/download/index.html
There is a button named as "TWO SOUNDCARDS" in Config->AUDIO tab. Make a similar selection (Master with your computer's built in and Headphones with the USB one).

Can you also post a screenshot of your Audio Midi Setup (in Applications->Utilities) ?
