There is no best! It's simply personal choice. Use whatever method you're comfortable with.

I don't use the crossfader at all. I prefer to use the channel faders because IMO it allows me to balance the volumes of each track the way I want, rather than a preset amount governed by the position of a crossfader.

Crossfade works best when your bpms are close and you can sync it or match it by ear, the volume fade in and out is really good from going from lets say 150bmp to a 80 bpm song. It also depends if your doing a mashup you may use both in that case
