My son saw a million videos on youtube and wanted one of these for his birthday. He rarely wants anything and is hard to find gifts for at Christmas and his Birthday. So... I was excited that he actually had something he was interested in.
Unfortunately, this was also about the same time as he discovered Fortnite. The Novation Launchpad MK2 Ableton Live Controller has seen very little use as a result. So I cannot find anything bad to say about the Launchpad, it works great. And it looks like I will eventually be selling a "like new" Launchpad one day.
I will say, based on the youtube videos that convinced us to buy this thing, that it is the epitome of reasonably priced controllers. It works very well with the Ableton software that is the standard for this kind of device.
I would recommend that if you get one of these, watch the numerous youtube videos beforehand and AFTER you buy it too. They are much more helpful than the provided instructions. A youtube video will get you up and running in no time at all. If you can convince them to put down the Fortnite gaming controller long enough to play with it. :-(
First time buyer. I'm 16 I had no prior knowledge with Launchpads or any type of Midi controllers apon ordering this launchpad. Took a little bit to set up, I suggest looking up a few tutorials of you need help setting it up. Ableton lite was easy to set up and a very fast download. I have also used my MKll with my Galaxy Tab A using an adapter from micro USB to USB. Works like a charm, everything arrived earlier then expected and was packaged neatly. Would highly recommend this for anyone wanting to get into Midi controllers.

Our 10 year old son had seen this on something he had watched and we love buying him things were he can be creative. I didn't realize this was something you would have to use with a computer. And...always with a computer. It is not a stand alone. Some of them apparently can be...but this one has to be hooked up to a computer.
My husband (who is an amazing father) really tried to get it working. It comes with a TON of software downloads. He has a gaming computer with TONS of room and after downloading a lot of stuff, he tried to play one of his games and had to stop because it was lagging from everything downloaded. He was shocked how MUCH stuff there was to download. You have to get all stuff to download and install and on and on. It is totally understandable and if our son was older and understood more computer stuff (and had a computer of his own) it would completely different. We had it a few days and gave up and returned it.
We ended up buying him the irig and it will work on the ipad. It is complicated also, but at least it is on the ipad and it didn't require to download a bunch of stuff.
This LP MK2 runs great! It took a bit of finagling at first, because I didn't realize that you have to go into settings and enable the input and outputs (for the MIDI input to work, and for the lightshow to work, respectively). Once I did that, everything ran fine! There were a couple times where I'd plug it in, and nothing would register. No LEDs would work, mode 1 & 2 & session wouldn't do anything either. I'm assuming it's something on my computer's end, because as soon as I plugged it into my laptop instead, everything ran fine. Be warned though, once you buy this, it's fairly addicting and may take up all your free time!
The launchpad is a great tool for production... when it works. Initially i had no issues with the controller but I soon started to run into problems such as the launchpad suddenly freezing and stop responding, as well as it not being recognized by my computer when trying to unplug and plug in again to restart. Its a fun little toy and a great concept but there is some fundemental design issues that need to be worked out. Cant believe such an expensive piece of equipment made by a reputable company could have so many issues.
It's easy to setup but hard to learn, comes with a free copy of Ableton live lite and very fun to mess around with. It's not as accurate as a instrument but I held off on buying one for years and I'm glad I finally broke down and did.
